More pattern help needed!
Progress on the baby sweater.. I was able to cast off one shoulder. I did a damn fine job if i do say so myself. Though I didnt totaly cast off the last stich correctly but hey its the BACK of the sweat you do first right? hehe..
My book came today - The Knitters Book of Finishing Techniques
What do you know but I used it this very day in order to learn how to do a cast off in pattern (k, p). I had to concentrate hard. Kicked Jesse out of the room because he was on the phone jabberin away. I was so excited I have wanted to be at this part in the back side for well over a week! But I am still not done.. who wants to help me with this next part?
Looking at the RS I have a section of cast off stiches (shoulder I assume) then they decrease down a bit and then on a stich holder is many stiches. So I need to make the center of the neck and the other shoulder.. (I assume).

---- <- cast off
\
\
------------ <- on stich holder
With RS facing
working on rem 45 sts, slip 19 sts onto a sitch holder.
Um well they are all on a stich holder?? So I need to put the non-19 back onto a needle.. which ones? center ones? right ones?
Rejoin yarn to rem 26 sts and pattern to end.
Rejoin with what?? The new yarn I need to bring in?? How does one bring in new yarn??

Ok, you want the center 19 to be on a holder and the rest to be on the needle, right or left depending on which shoulder you are working.
Regarding rejoining the yarn, if you have worked one shoulder and cast off for it or finished and put the last stitches on a holder depending on teh kind of finishing you are going to do then cut the working yarn and rejoin that ball. Start it just like any other new ball of yarn.
Hope that helps

I would assume that right now you have all the rest of the stitches on the holder except for the shoulder you have already cast off, right? Now you will want to do exactly the same thing for the opposite shoulder, except it will be a mirror image. Put the center 19 stitches on a holder (OK, leave them on the holder they are already on!), and put the remaining 26 stitches back on your needle. With your right side facing you, take the "new" yarn end from the ball of yarn, leave a long enough tail to weave in later, and just start knitting. That first stitch will feel really loosey-goosey for the first few rows, but you can just snug it up, and eventually you will weave that end in to tighten things up. I throw the yarn over the needle with my right hand, so when I join new yarn, I wrap the end of the new yarn a few times around one of my left hand fingers to keep it snug and out of the way. Then make sure the yarn now in your working/throwing hand is actually coming from the ball of yarn so you are not starting your row with only 6 or 8 inches (ask me how I know this!). Make sense?
